What explains recent conflict between high-profile businesspeople and the state in China? While China’s economic transformation was built on supposedly cozy state-business relations, Professor Meg Rithmire and her co-author, Dr. Hao Chen, document the emergence of a particular kind of large, non-state business group that they argue is more akin to a mafia system than any standard definition of a firm.
